Diploma Exam Information

Quick Facts for Students and Parents/Guardians

What are diploma exams?

Diploma exams are administered to students in select Grade 12 courses and have 3 main purposes:

  • to certify the level of individual student achievement in selected Grade 12 courses;
  • to ensure that province-wide standards of achievement are maintained;
  • to report individual and group results.
When are diploma exams administered?

Diploma exams are administered annually in January, April, June, August, and November according to the schedule posted in the General Information Bulletin at https://education.alberta.ca/diploma-exam-administration/general-information-bulletin.

How will results from diploma exams be shared with students?

Approximately 3 weeks after the administration of diploma exams, student results are available on myPass at https://mypass.alberta.ca. For assistance with myPass, contact the Client Services Help Desk at 780-427-5318 (Dial 310-0000 to be connected toll-free from outside the Edmonton area).

In order to provide a secure examination environment, Bishop O’Byrne High School reviews the examination policies at each sitting to ensure exam security and address conditions that would allow for the possibility of cheating that would provide some students with an unfair advantage. Academic integrity is of primary importance; therefore, every precaution has been taken to allow students to accurately represent their exam performance.

Alberta Education Diploma Exam Security and Examination Rules state that:

“Students may not bring any papers, notes of any kind… headsets, CD players, digital audio players, cell phones, pagers, or other electronic devices into the examination room. No hand-held electronic dictionaries and no electronic or paper templates and/or graphic organizers are allowed… Students must ensure that dictionaries, and references used for Part A of English Language Arts 30-1, English Language Arts 30-2, Social Studies 30-1, Social Studies 30-2, and all calculators are completely free of notes or study material.

“Any student in possession of materials not allowed in examination rooms will have his/her mark invalidated.”

Particular attention will be paid to personal, wireless electronic devices such as cell phones. Please note that Alberta Education may not permit students to rewrite a diploma exam for one year following a mark being invalidated. Transcripts may be withheld for a period up to one year, or their official transcripts may be annotated. Along with the above listed banned items, coats, jackets, purses, back packs will not be allowed in any of the writing centres. Please leave these items in school lockers.

Photo ID is essential for diploma exams. Students will not be allowed to write a diploma exam without this.

We request that students and parents review the exam schedule sent out in the newsletter, or found on our website, and that students be aware of their responsibility toward academic integrity and exam security, as they study and prepare for the exams.
